Nigri Chalo 18-19 May 2015

Singrauli is the land of exceedingly high pollution and environmental destruction which includes clearing of forests, sweeping land grab and damming of rivers. High handed administration deals with adivasis and peasants with brute force. There have been innumerable struggles for Jal-Jangal-Zameen since the early 1980s. Corporate industry has appeared there with a new aggression in the last decade.

Lokavidya Group at Singrauli is engaged with others in putting together activists in the Vindhya Region to form a general support group for the Jal-Jangal-Zameen struggles in that region. This group called Vindhya Janandolan Samarthak Samooh (VJSS) has had several meetings in last few months, activists coming from the districts of Singrauli, Seedhi, Reeva , Satna, Umariya, Shahadol and Anooppur. VJSS has given a call to gather at Nigri on 18th and 19th May.
The program is -

  • Khet Bachao-Gaon Bachao Mahapanchayat - 18th May, 10 am, Higher Secondary School Field
  • Bandh Hatao - Nadi Bachao - Atikraman Girao Dharna - 19th May, 10 am, The place of dam on the river Gopad.
Gopad river divides Singrauli and Seedhi. Flowing northwards it joins the river Son. By the side of the river JP Associates has captured a very large plot of land on both sides of the road and is engaged in building a thermal power station and a metals/minerals factory. It has built a dam on Gopad to serve its industries and the entire administration of Seedhi and Singrauli admits not being aware of this dam at all. People of the region are being mobilized for this program to challenge the entirely illegal encroachment by JP on the river Gopad. The river flows through a protected forest and time and again the fishermen are hauled up by the district administration on charges of illegal fishing, who do it only to augment their dwindling livelihoods.
