Lokavidya Jan Andolan (LJA) - One More Step

Mumbai Meeting Expands LJA Scope

The meeting in Mumbai on 23-24 Feb. 2013, helped to consolidate the activities of LJA during last one year, mainly since the Sevagram meeting on 17th March 2012. Whereas there was good discussion on the Lokavidya philosophy, the details from the various regions of activity got reported. Building of Lokavidya Ashrams and initiating dialogue on Lokavidya Tana-Bana were fresh high lights that infused a creative strand and a sense of looking beyond what one keeps doing organizationally. The meeting attended by about 40 persons concluded on a forward looking and imaginative note.

LJA Organization - The Regions
The program adopted in the November 2011 Varanasi Conference was implemented through the last year. There was the Darbhanga Conference for Bihar state on 31st March-1st April 2012, the Chirala Conference for Andhra Pradesh on 24-25 May 2012, the Singrauli Conference for Madhya Pradesh on 28-30 September 2012 and the Indore regional event on 19-20 January 2013. Dialogue on Lokavidya Tana-Bana was initiated at Varanasi through a large meeting at Vidya Ashram on 19-20 February 2012. The LJA worked very closely every where with peasants in their struggles, which were often to save their lands from forced acquisition. It also tried to develop links with artisan and adivasi groups and organizations. All this got reported concurrently on this blog.

In this meeting in Mumbai the report from Varanasi by Premalata Singh underlined the integral connection of the LJA work in Uttar Pradesh with Bharatiya Kisan Union and attempts to build lokavidya relations with weavers and other artisans. A state level LJA Meet jointly with BKU U.P. is proposed for November this year.
Work in Singrauli has taken some strides forward after the state level convention of LJA held there in end September 2012. Ravishekhar reported on their present activity in far flung areas and amid those displaced by the continuous stream of new private power companies. It is planned to publish a monthly paper from Lokavidya Ashram in Singrauli. They also plan to undertake a Lokavidya tour of the state jointly with Indore activists and Vidya Ashram Varanasi. It is proposed to have a state level lokavidya activists meeting in Bhopal on 22-23 June 2013.
Sanjeev Daji reported from the Indore region. Here the highlights include a Bazar Modo-Lokavidya Bazar Banao campaign, Gyan Panchayats on the issue of displacement rampant there due to Delhi-Mumbai Corridor and expanding industrial-educational-habitat activity, a fresh program of loka gayaki mainly with Kabir mandalis and a continuous dialogue with the somewhat socially inclined middle classes of Indore city. Kisan-Adivasi unity forms the general basis and the direction giving context of LJA work in this region.

Mohan Rao and Narayan Rao  talked about the organizational activity among artisans around Chirala and Vijaywada and the publication of Lokavidya Prapancham, a Telugu periodical, from Hyderabad. Krishnarajulu gave a picture of displacement of peasants and fishermen along coastal Andhra Pradesh and the LJA connection with it, particularly with work in Sompeta, Shrikakulam and Nellore.

Lokavidya Ashram

Dilip Kumar from Varanasi, Ekta from Singrauli and Sanjeev from Indore reported on the building of Lokavidya Ashrams in their regions. Dilip also talked about the possibility of building a Lokavidya Ashram on the bank of the Son river in Anooppur (M.P.) jointly with Kabir panthis there.

Lokavidya Tana-Bana

Friends from the world of art in Mumbai, Pune and Chennai had joined for the debate on Lokavidya Tana-Bana. They included a shahir, a designer, a singer,a cinema director, a TV shows and short films director,  a cinema script writer, a theater person, a sculptor and a university lok-kala teacher. The idea of Lokavidya Tana-Bana as the space of relationships and connectivity among the lokavidyadhar samaj was presented and a discussion initiated on how this could be the critical space where the artists could contribute to building of new imagination and initiative in return to what they incessantly take from the people. They all spoke. The attempt was to focus on the possibility of artistic activity giving new and politically significant meaning to Lokavidya Tana-Bana. It was felt that this is a new dialogue and there is need to explore the variety of forms that this dialogue can take.
Kelai Draupadi, a Tamil film by Sashikanth, was screened. It presents a forgotten aspect of the tradition of struggles in this country, struggles for negotiating peace settlements with aggressors.

Lokavidya Darshan

A participatory discussion took place at the beginning of the meeting on the question of political imagination that may derive from the lokavidya stand-point.Among many questions raised while initiating this relatively philosophical discussion, two got the focus.  One, whether there was a clear need again to think in terms of 'swaraj' and not in terms of 'democracy' ? And two, what is the nature of our engagement - are we engaged in a war to finish off the present and build the future anew OR is it a struggle based negotiation for a peaceful settlement through which the people can regain their lost initiative and also new opportunities for fresh initiative ? Builders of the lokavidya darshan and Vidya Ashram present in the meeting came forward to express deeper thought on people, change and the knowledge loci in society. This was a discussion taking place for the first time in the context of Lokavidya Jan Andolan and it was felt that attempts should be made to get more and more people to participate in it.

In the End

The following emerged through these meetings.
  • All the regions of activity shall have full autonomy in their work. It is important that activists from different regions collaborate for work.
  • Definite income for everyone based on lokavidya work and emoluments equal to that of a government employee, emerged as the idea around which extensive coordination within LJA can be achieved. Concrete methods of doing this may be envisaged in relation to the ideas and work going on with respect to this in different regions.
  • Peasants' struggles are steadily on the rise across the country. They exhibit great variety and all feel the need of cooperation from and coordination with others. Coordination of peasants' struggles all over the country is a challenge that LJA needs to accept.
  • The building of Lokavidya Ashrams should continue.
  • Lokavidya Tana-Bana provides a new location for experiments and new enterprise with and for different types of artists.
  • Vidya Ashram Varanasi remains the secretariat of LJA, until concrete proposals are received from some other place.

Time Table Mumbai Meetings 23-24 Feb. 2013

Meetings of Vidya Ashram Samiti, Lokavidya Jan Andolan (LJA) Samitis & Lokavidya Tana-Bana

Venue : Lodging, Boarding and Meeting
Bio-Medical Ethics Center, St. Pius College, Arey Road, Goregaon East, Mumbai

The two day schedule given below gives the details of how the discussion in these meetings in Mumbai is proposed to be organized. In the beginning participants may suggest changes or modifications and then finalize it. The issues and topics have been before us for preparatory discussions for  some time now.

The first point about the Present Situation and the Lokavidya Standpoint is expected to provide the general context for the discussions that would follow. The entire breadth of this topic cannot be covered in a short span which is available for it and we would like to focus on the question of political imagination that the lokavidya standpoint may be said to breed. What are the essential features and principles around which such political imagination needs to build itself ? What is the nature of that society whose knowledge bases are mainly in lokavidya ? Do we need to think in terms of Swaraj and not Democracy ? Does the space of connectivity among the lokavidyadhar samaj provides the new location of initiating the desired change ? How can ideas of self-organization, autonomy and emergence be seen as located in a people's space, being shaped and nurtured by lokavidya initiatives ? What are the practical questions before an LJA activist ? Are we engaged in a 'war' to demolish the present and build afresh or in some kind of a 'grand negotiation' to retrieve the lost spaces and secure fresh ones ? We may raise these and similar questions in the first hour to underline the broad context and direction for the dialogue in the two days.

The Time Table

The names mentioned are of those who are expected to initiate discussion on the respective point, everyone will have the opportunity to express his/her view. The time given is the total time for that topic.

Lokavidya Mel-milap , Indore

This is to report two lokavidya mel-milap events, one in Indore in Mahavar Nagar basti  on February 13 and the other on 14th in  Agara village, 30 km from Indore.
An all night Kabir Gayaki program was organized at Mahavar Nagar basti on 13th February 2013. Mahavar Nagar is a 150 year old basti populated by koli samaj who are mistris in civil construction sector and who worship Kabir. There is a small Kabir Chabutara in the basti. Mahavar Nagar residents themselves organized this event under the banner of Lokavidya Jan Andolan. Prahlad Tatwal, Pramod Sisodiya, Ghanshyam Sher, Kailash Tatwal, Anil, Hemant, Nandram, Sunil, Laxman, Raja and Gabba were prominent among the organizers. About 60 loka-kalakars participated to sing in the presence of about 250 people. Adiwasi Bhil artist-groups came from several villages in the Manpur area. There were four mandalis from Mahavar Nagar itself. Social and political activists from Indore, Malwa and Nimad got an opportunity to interact with one-another in the context of an adivasi - karigar interactive presence.
Under the direction of Lokavidya Samnvay Samooh , Indore, a five pillar madai was made as a stage. The five pillars symbolized the five constituents of lokavidyadhar samaj, namely peasants, artisans, adivasi, women and small shopkeepers. There were banners all over carrying lokavidya message.

Next morning on 14th Feb. 45 persons, adivasis and karigars, from this event moved to village Agra near Depalpur (30 km from Indore) where lokavidya Samanvay Samooh, Paladi had organized a Lokavidyadharon ka Mel-Milap. Kisans from 10 nearby villages namely Paladi, Agra, Akasoda, Beeja, Sivandri, Mirjapur, Ahirkhedi, Murkhed, Arinya and Magliya participated in the Mel-Milap. Sumer Singh, Kailash, Rajesh, Shankar, Shaitan Singh, Hari Singh, Kalyan Singh, Jeevan and Jagdeesh were behind this organiztion.

Thus the lokavidya mel-milap attempted to create a meeting place for adivasis, karigars and kisans in and through activities that are their own. The Indore Lokavidya Samanvay Samooh would like to bring these ideas of mel-milap and Kabir Gayaki to the Mumbai meeting on Lokavidya Tana-bana for views of various lokavidya associates coming to this meeting from all over the country.

A Grave Responsibility

It is not easy to settle the question of science in the context of a knowledge movement, perhaps even within that of Lokavidya, as we have no deep reflection of the knowledge to be created, of what we do not know, what we are unable to imagine. Thus, for example, we all have a clear idea what the state power or its agencies - police, courts, corrupt officialdom, political parties and their hired killers , etc - should not do. And all the while, we have no idea of the knowledge that is going to be created, should be created; just as the Marxist-Leninist party then did not have ( or Islamic Brotherhood today does not have)  any idea of the knowledge that is going be created, a future of nation state which is not at war and is not fundamentally violent. They contemplate a shift in the balance of power and an ultimate "victory" using tools and weapons created by the the samaj ( working class / ordinary people ) which their "enemies" own, market and deploy. The enemies ( states / non-state ) do not have any idea of the knowledge to be created either; but, may be, they need not have any! For, (a) they exercise absolute power, (b), and this is the important point here, "science" does it for them free! As we scan the functioning of the world of Science and Technology, we realize the truth that the main function of science is to create knowledge according to market forces, the forces marketing their products in the media.

In other words, it is this inability to imagine knowledge creation without science or its instrumentalities ( and that includes war ), which is perhaps at the heart of the defeat of contemporary movements for social change world over, including ourselves. And it seems to play a crucial role in the manner in which we visualize the dynamics of Lokavidya Janandolan. It appears almost a corollary that the development of a clearcut moral thread, may be seeking the understanding of what is really the knowledge in society represented by the Sant parampara, could be the key new knowledge - which could make all the difference between taking over the ownership of whatever is the new avatar of S&T or seizing that chance of being truely human and even beyond.

Can we imagine that Lokavidya Tana-bana as the dialogue with truth, with the nation and with lokavidya itself? With truth, it holds the face its sees in the mirror of history and declares that all history is but the history of displacement of Lokavidya and denial of Tana-bana, the direct experience of truth . With the nation it (like prince Prahlad, who prays for the dissolution of the kingdom), prays from its heart for the dissolution of all nation states; for, they have created the people's identity based on the war machines and nation's credit rating. And with Lokavidya itself it asks not about the its past, nor its marginalization and displacement description of the day, but its contention of the future - its perception of the flow of time whatever it may be that.

And is it possible to guess the objective basis for this shift? It appears that the objective basis for the shift lies beyond Gandhi and the modern understanding of the Indian society as being subject to Chatur Varna from eternity. The dominant contribution to the tradition of Rshis and knowledge in our civilization transcended this division,  was not subject to the division and the producers of knowledge, was cast out side as the Pancham, the fifth! In a certain definite sense, where the earliest gods have been represented with the instruments of worship - Shiva with the drum and Saraswati with veena etc, the most important conclusion one can derive is that the Lokavidya , from its mundane to the cosmic dimensions, is not subject to the Varna system of social exploitation and organization of Indian society. On the other hand the chatur varna system and the exclusion of the Pancham points to a deliberate effort during the period of consolidation of the state, to hold the society and survive under any possible threat. Moreover, the major portion of the Indian society lived outside the chatur varna, autonomously and actually were the masters of all the knowledge and the philosophy of human life, while the Varna system was applicable to only those who were directly involved in the admistration of the state, not unlike the reservation system starting from the British. It is this declaration by the Lokavidyadhar Samaj, that will be one aspect of the basis for Lokavidya Tana-Bana and its globalization.

The inescapable conclusion is that knowledge creators alone will be able to create a casteless society, the dream of Mahatma Gandhi, Vivekananda and the whole sant parampara in our country. Moreover, in the larger context, that focus can enable us to face the new caste system unleashed by Knowledge Management, the philosophy of  the spread of internet technologies. And that defines a clear focus and responsibility for the Lokavidyadhar samaj as knowledge creators, gatherers and practitioners.
